Nafta operates underground storage facilities and conducts gas and oil exploration and production activities in Slovakia. In 2008, approx. 1.1 billion kWh of gas and some 18,000 tonnes of oil were produced.
Supply security and meeting contractual delivery obligations were the decisive issues for Nafta in 2009. During the gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine, Europe's biggest gas supply crisis ever, Nafta more then fulfilled its contractual obligations and thus played a crucial role in helping keep Slovakia supplied with gas.
Work continued as planned on the expansion of the "Gajary Baden" storage facility. , In the final expansion phase, Nafta will have another 500 million m³ of storage capacity available in "Gajary Baden" in addition to the 1,980 million m³ it already has. Nafta is developing further storage capacity in cooperation with Pozagas a.s., in which it holds an interest of 35 %. In the joint venture with OMV AG, preparations were made to sink new boreholes in the Vienna Basin in the west of Slovakia. Through this venture, Nafta is expecting to considerably expand its exploration activities. Furthermore, Nafta moved its company headquarters from the old location in Gbely to Bratislava in order to be nearer to its customers and core business.
The majority shareholder of Nafta is Slovenský plynárenský priemysel a.s., Bratislava, which holds a 56.2 % interest in the company.
